A great homemade toilet cleaning idea.
Dangerous chemicals are often used in our bathroom and toilet cleaning routine.
However, the fumes from these chemicals can cause all sorts of problems for your health. Many bathrooms cleaners contain phthalates, often simply labeled as “fragrance” These are endocrine disruptors that have been linked to reduced sperm counts in men. Anything labeled as anti-bacterial usually contains aluminum compounds and triclosan, even though it actually promotes the growth of drug resistant bacteria and is a probable carcinogen. Bathroom products usually contain ammonia too, a powerful irritant that will particularly affect those with asthma and lung problems as it evaporates, and can cause the development of chronic bronchitis.
Try making these toilet cleaning bombs, which will kill bacteria as well as leaving a great smell.
- 1 cup Baking Soda
- ½ cup Citric Acid
- 1/8 cup Borax, optional
- 20 drops Lemon essential oil
- 15 drops Juniper Berry essential oil
- 20 drops Sweet Orange essential oil
- 20 drops Lavender essential oil
- Strong peppermint tea
In a glass bowl, combine the baking soda, citric acid & borax. Add the essential oils one at a time, mixing as you go. Add peppermint tea by the teaspoon, sprinkling it in slowly. You want to add enough tea so that the mixture is just damp enough to pack together. Be careful, as it could fizz up and liquefy if the tea is added too quickly.
Pack the mixture, which should have the texture of wet sand, in to a mould. Ice cube trays work well if you don’t have a soap mould to hand. Leave the toilet bombs to dry for a few hours or overnight, and then store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use them.
To use them, drop one toilet cleaning bomb in to your toilet and allow to dissolve, then just scrub and flush!
