If you want to experience adventure, fantastic scenery from the comfort of a seat, what better way than to put your feet up and take a few train journeys through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world. Here are a few of our favourites.
1- Tren A Las Nubes
The “Train to the Clouds” is a great one if you’re okay with altitude. It runs along the old line from Salta in Argentina and goes right to the Chilean border. At its peak, it climbs to nearly 14,000 feet and is the highest train journey in the world which doesn’t use a rack and pinion system. There’s oxygen on board, just in case you were wondering. It’s a seven-hour journey, but the time will still pass too quickly and you’ll want to do it all again.
2- Oslo to Bergen
Another with plenty of altitude, this is the highest major rail route in northern Europe with some fantastic mountainous scenery. Quite simply, it’s one of the most incredible and diverse terrains you’ll travel through. It’s like passing through all the seasons one by one. You’ll see sunshine, you’ll see snow. What goes up must also come down and it also includes some steep downhill routes.
3- Koblenz to Mainz
As far as railway journeys go, this is surely one of the prettiest. It’s a great way to view the River Rhine as it’s rightby your side for some 60 miles. It’s a fairytale scene of quaint houses and castles. To get the best view, sit on the left hand side.
4- Bernina Express
Its quite simply, breathtaking. The route take you from Chur in eastern Switzerland to Tirano in northern Italy. It’s a 90-mile tip which takes you through 55 tunnels and no less than 196 bridges. You’ll see waterfalls, glaciers and even the occasional snowstorm. The windows have been designed so you’ll get a great view of the surroundings.
5- Orient-Express Venice Simplon
There are train journeys and they there are TRAIN JOURNEYS! Grande dame of luxury trains, simply the most glamorous, luxurious and thrilling service on the planet. Other superlatives abound. Here in magnificent Twenties art-deco carriages is world-class service, the finest haute cuisine freshly cooked on board, gorgeous alpine scenery, and, for the romantically-inclined, a piano bar for the evenings. You will find no Wi-Fi, showers or private bathrooms on board. But who cares when you are travelling on the original – and best.
